Runnies and Coughies

For the past week or so, my babies have been having runny noses and coughs. Kylee actually has it worse since she seems to have sticky phlegm in her throat in conjunction with her drippy nose. Lyka, on the other hand, just lets out an occasional cough here and there, sometimes even inventing the whole thing altogether. Treating the kids’ malady isn’t really rocket science but it does leave a mom, or at least, me with frayed nerves at the end of the day.

It is just so hard to make kids drink their medicines...

To her credit, Lyka has been cooperative when it comes to drinking her daily vitamins and her rare medicine. Kylee, to my constant dismay, makes vitamins drinking such a struggle. It all starts with the bib. Whenever Kylee spies me carrying / brandishing a bib or even one of her threadbare lampin, she would make a beeline to her dad, or to any adult who isn’t me and claim “sanctuary!” Then comes the minor tussle to get the bib / lampin around her neck and her consequent tantrum. She’d bawl, and kick, and try to push me or my hand away in the effort to stop me from bringing the dreaded medicine dropper to her mouth. Eventually, she’d capitulate and open her mouth to let the medicine drop, only to spit portions of it afterward. So imagine my consternation. At times, when I am at my crankiest, I’d find myself nearly screaming out my frustration. I mean, I just want her to get better, and aside from the wasted syrup, not to mention the money to buy the syrup, she ruins her clothes by spitting out those multivitamins and iron supplements. They stain like heck! It’s almost impossible to get out of any fabric! I just end up wringing my hands and accept my defeat. At least she gets a bit of the vitamins / medicine. The worse thing about it is that with paracetamol, diphenhydramine, or even some mucolytic, you have to re-administer them every four to six hours. The chore falls to me as Leejay’s responsibility is to work for the family while I’m in charge of the kids.

It’s not that I don’t like being a mom , but sometimes things like this just gets under your skin, especially if you’re always in close proximity with your kids. I have never been a patient person, and I only pray that I would learn the art of patience. My kids need me to be patient, even if it is the hardest thing to do sometimes. I guess that’s what’s being a parent is all about.
