Deck the Hall With… I Have No Idea

Christmas. T’is the season to be jolly, generous, kind to your neighbors, et cetera. It is the time for family reunions, get-togethers, and parties. It is also the season when people either hide from or seek out their godchildren to give out favors and gifts. XD

Yet somehow, I am not looking forward to Christmas like I used to when I was younger. It seems to be like just another ordinary day to me. The recent economic crunch notwithstanding, I’m just not as excited as I used to be.

Have you ever noticed that as you grow older, somehow, the glitter of Christmas seems to dull every passing year. That the strong anticipation you had when you were eight years old just isn’t there. But Christmas never changed. Maybe, we did, or at least I did. I remember sleeping on a mat in my grandmother’s living room when I was a child. Sleeping there, beside my brothers and cousin, barely able to close my eyes, counting all the candies and toys I’d be getting from Santa Claus. I would even sneak peeks to see if he’d really come; if he would go through the window since we had no chimney. Eventually midnight came and we were roused from the mat – and lo! There we tons of gifts under the tree (at least it looked like a ton back then), and the tube socks my uncle loaned us were full to bursting. Then there was all the food on the table, especially my favourite leche flan. Back then, Christmas was something to look forward to. Christmas is always something to look forward to, if you are a child.

Now, days pass by before our eyes and we don’t seem to notice. The days are long but the years are short, so they say. And once again, Christmas has crept up on us without us noticing. Even my daughter is much too young to know Christmas and its significance. Maybe I have become jaded after al these years of self-searching — or not. Maybe i just plain didn’t notice. XD

But despite all this emo talk about Christmas and all, It is still the same Christmas despite all that has changed. And for the sake of the children, let’s make Christmas the best we could. Merry Christmas!
