And Another Year Cometh
So it´s another new year! It´s funny how time flies so fast. Imagine, it´s already 2009, and yet somehow things are still the same and at the same time, they are not. Once instance of this is the relative silence with which the new year was greeted, at least here in our street. Back in 2007, as early as the last week of November or the first week of December, you would hear firecrackers popping around the block. By the time New Year´s Eve comes, you be wary to walk outside for fear of being an accidental collateral damage of celebrating the turn of the year. But this year, it´s a different story. Maybe the national campaign for a safer New Year did work, maybe their ¨Explosion Accident Awareness¨ drive did help, or maybe people are just reluctant to burn up money just for a few minutes or an hour of lights and bangs for the sake of tradition.
For our part here in our compound, we just settled with a bit of home-made noise – banging pots and pans, music blaring in the highest allowable volume; and a few boxes of tiny sparklers. Then we just watched as the sky was illuminated by tens of brilliant colourful fireworks provided by our neighbours on our street and a couple of blocks over. Overall, it was a safe New Year´s Celebration for us and that was good enough.

When I took Lyka out to see the fireworks, I was actually wary of stray fireworks but thanks to the slight drizzle and the reason I gave out earlier, there was very little risk of that – save maybe for some sniffles. Anyway, she was practically ecstatic about it. She would scream her heart out if she would see a display she liked and she would point every where and make sure you see what she saw. I was more fascinated by her wide-eyed awe than the fireworks themselves. Next year, I will have double that fascination as Kylee will be celebrating that New Year with us. XD
