A Song of Staves and Shields – Preview

As the day wears on, the GLADUS TEK MA fever seems to keep it strength. There was an online clamour for a novelization of the original situation. To this challenge rose one PayrPaks, and as of this writing, he is still on his thinking chair, dreaming of the upcoming events to this drama. And so, I bring to you, A Song of Staves and Shields.

style=“Had enough?”, the Elemental Lord said as if mocking the downed Paladin.
The Paladin stood up in response. Visibly tired and hurt, the Paladin turned to face his opponent, smirking at her to show he hasn’t lost the will to fight.
“I see that you haven’t had enough punishment for the day. Very well, perish in flames!”
Conjuring up a flame ember on her right hand, it soon grew into a larger flame. Pointing it towards the direction of the Paladin, she released the ball of flame towards her opponent, intending to end the fight at that moment.
Eyes still brimming with confidence, the Paladin raised his hand, calling out for the goddess Althea to help him in this time of need.
“Goddess protect me!”, he shouted towards the heavens.
The ball of flame hit the ground where the Paladin stood, resulting in a giant explosion of flames and dirt. The audience was surprised and awed at said explosion, and at the true power of the Elemental Lord.
“Gladus Tek Ma? What kind of a magical chant is that?”, the Elemental Lord mused to herself.
“Nevertheless, my opponent is now decimated. Let’s see if he can survive that one! Ohohoho~!”, she continued.
But, from the smoke and flames, a figure emerged. Standing there, undaunted and unscathed, was the very Paladin she just shot with her ball of flame. The Paladin looked at her, still having the same smirk on his face, and readied into his battle position.
“I-I-Impossible! H-How could you survive my…”
The Elemental Lord was visibly shocked. What was that spell? Gladus Tek Ma? Was he saved by that spell? I have never heard of a spell like that! Questions were going on through her head at that very moment.
However, she, too, hasn’t lost the will to fight, and went back to her battle position, readying herself to unleash another barrage of spells.
“Freezing Field!”
She initiated the fight once again, freezing the ground where the Paladin stood. Again, the Paladin was stood his ground, taking no damage from the recent blow by the Elemental Lord.
“W-What? H-How could he?”
Visibly irritated, she blinked towards her opponent, and casted another spell.
“Glacial Spike!”
Again, the Paladin, keeping his trusty Shield up, withstood her cold spell. The Paladin knew she would cast another spell so he retreated to the side, making sure that he will not get hurt by another one of her spells.
And he was right. Upon using an Ice spell, she shortly followed it with another Ice spell. Ice spikes protruded from the ground, skewering everything on its path. The Paladin, who was long gone from that position, was unharmed.
Enraged, the Elemental Lord blinked back and retreated. Conjuring up another ball of flame on her hand, she was surprised to find her opponent lunging towards her, Mace in hand.
In a moment of desperation, she shot the fireball towards him. The resulting explosion caught him, and her, off-guard, flinging her back several meters away. She was knocked down, but to her surprise, the Paladin just stood there, still unharmed just like before.
“You are really irrita-”
But before she can finish her sentence, the Paladin dashed towards her, striking her with his Mace. Her frail body felt the violent strikes of his Mace. Every time the Mace struck, a painful moan escapes her lips. Her body felt every thud of his Mace, furthering her agony from the hands of her opponent. Finally, the last strike was given, knocking her down to the ground, panting from the wave of strikes given to her by the Paladin.
“P-Please… Stop…”, she pleaded, still visibly panting.
The Paladin, who may have just realized that his opponent was a female, sheathed his Mace and Shield. The Paladin offered his right hand, attempting to help her stand up.
“Hah!”

style=The Paladin was blown away by the force of the shock wave released by his opponent, knocking him down to the ground.
“Tch! I really should be more careful next time”, the Paladin whispered to himself as he was about to stand up.
Looking at his opponent now, it’s no surprise to him why he got tricked.
“She really is beautiful…”, he mused to himself.
Quickly realizing that he was about to submit to his own desires, he shook his head to get rid of these thoughts. “What was I thinking? Goddess Althea, help me overcome these thoughts!”, the Paladin said to himself, still trying his best to get rid of his thoughts.
Still pondering to his thoughts, he didn’t notice the Elemental Lord blinking towards his side, ready to cast another spell.

“Freezing Field!”
Unaware of her presence, the Paladin was encased in a block of ice. He tried to break free of his ice cage, but to no avail. He then heard several magical incantations. The Elemental Lord was ready to unleash a barrage of spells!
He moved back and forth quickly, trying to break free of his cold prison. He was successful, but it was too late for him. She had already finished the incantations and is now about to attack him.
“Freezing Sword! Fire Wall! Inferno!”
Badly hurt from the barrage of spells, he rolled backwards and retreated. Parts of his body were badly burned due to the last spell. He focused his attention towards her, with her now sporting the same smirk he had earlier.
“Ready to give up now? But I wouldn’t allow it, unless you begged for mercy and kissed my feet! Ohohoho~!”
“Tch!”, he muttered to himself. “I guess I have no choice but to use it this time, huh?” Muttering an incantation, a green aura enveloped his body. His wounds and burns were now completely soothed by the green aura, as if they weren’t there at all. All the pain inflicted by the Elemental Lord’s spell were completely healed.
“T-This can’t be! H-How is it… possible?”, the Elemental Lord said, with a frustrated tone.
Pointing his Mace towards the direction of the Elemental Lord, the Paladin warned her.
“You will receive the goddess’ punishment right now! Get ready!”

"Get off me!"

"Get off me!"

“Goddess protect me!”
“That spell again! T-That Gladus-something!”, she blurted out unwittingly.
Distraught and out of options, she casted another Ice spell, preventing him from progressing towards her. But like earlier, he blocked it with his Shield and proceeded to dash towards her.
Realizing that she needs to buy some time to recite the incantations again, she blinked back and retreated, taking some time to recite the incantations needed for the spells. But the Paladin continued to pursue her, intending to pay her back for the damage she has done.
“I must stop him!”, she thought to herself while keeping him at bay with weaker spells and retreating at the same time.
As she tried to get away from him, she didn’t notice that she got herself cornered in a wall. Her spells cannot be cast yet, the incantations are still not recited fully. Out of desperation, she conjured up a small flame on her hand and shot it towards the direction of her opponent. But as always, it didn’t scratch nor hurt him at all.
Finally, the predator has reached his prey. In an instant, the Paladin moved in towards the Elemental Lord, striking her hard with his Mace.
“AHH!”, the Elemental Lord shrieked in pain.
Once again, she felt the hammering thud of his Mace on her body. Relentless and unforgiving, the Paladin continued to strike his opponent, ramming his weapon repeatedly, which made the Elemental Lord cried in anguish.
“S-S-Stop, please… I’m begging you…”, his opponent begged, trying to use her charm on to him again.
But the Paladin resolved his will. He won’t fall for her womanly guiles again. Still, a part of him wishes that he would not hurt his opponent, especially since his opponent is a lady. And a fine one at that, too.
But this is a battle; one must win and one must lose. There can only be one victor.
With that in mind, he intends to finish the battle with one final blow. Quickly, he moved backwards and called out upon his goddess. “I shall end this battle right now! Goddess incur thy wrath!”
Battered and bruised, the Elemental Lord tried to stand up. Suddenly, a huge figure towered over her. By the time she looked up and tried to evade, the figure slammed towards her side, flinging her forward to her opponent’s feet.
“Ahh… Ohh…”, the Elemental Lord cried out before she grew unconscious.
The victor is now clear. He won the battle. Crowds were cheering and shouting his name. King Cassius and his subjects clapped silently. Everyone was rejoicing for him.
But somehow, for him, this feels like an empty victory.
